UMANITOBA THESIS SUBMISSION
The Chair also notes that, if the external examiner is not present, the Chair or advisor, as decided will pose the questions from the external examiner to the candidate. Below are two examples of the milestones that are normally encountered in research-based graduate programs. Graduate students should especially be encouraged to attend. The thesis must constitute a distinct contribution to knowledge in the major field of study and the material must be of sufficient merit to be, in the judgment of the examiners, acceptable for publication. Following completion of the presentation and questioning period The Chair conducts the remainder of the Oral Examination as follows: Distribution of Thesis and Practicum to the Libraries.
The examining committee will include at least three members of the University of Manitoba academic staff, normally the same members as that of the candidate’s advisory committee, and an examiner external to the University of Manitoba. These connecting sections are mandatory. Following completion of the presentation and questioning period The Chair conducts the remainder of the Oral Examination as follows: If the table or figure is oversized, it is recommended that they be reduced in size in such a way that they remain clearly legible. The order of questioning from the examiners is:
The doctoral candidate, advisor, and all internal members of the examining committee must be present. Doctoral students must pass an oral examination of the subject of their thesis and matters relating thereto before they may obtain the Ph. The digital version must conform to the specifications outlined in this guide. Financial assistance received to conduct the research should be included here.
Some copyright holders prefer to use their own permission forms or licences. In the Board of Governors and Senate approved a policy on accepting research grants from outside umanitoha. Students at the U of M have sole copyright ownership over their document that is submitted as a requirement of an academic program. If there is a conflict between the instructions in this booklet and the style manual chosen, the former should be followed. Subnission presence of the external examiner is strongly encouraged but not mandatory.
Page numbers should be right justified.
University of Manitoba – Graduate Studies –
A thesis or practicum is typically completed within one year. A requirement of the PhD program.
The examination will be conducted by the Dean of Graduate Studies or the Dean’s designate chosen from among scholars of the University. An abstract of the thesis not more than words Notes: However, the document submitted by the student to the U of M becomes the property of the University.
An abstract should contain thesiw statement of the problem, methods, results and conclusions. Students can request the Libraries to do the conversion at no charge. The Chair outlines the procedures for the conduct of the examination for the candidate, examining committee, and audience as follows: Examiners may specify revisions regardless of the publication status. If for any reason an internal examiner is unable to be submlssion in person, participation via video-conferencing may be approved by FGS depending on the constitution of the submossion and the presence of other examiners.
It is not necessary to state the source of well-known or easily verifiable facts, but students are expected to appropriately acknowledge the sources of ideas and expressions they use in their written work, whether quoted directly or paraphrased.
In some cases, the copyright holder cannot submiesion located or the cost of obtaining permission is prohibitive to using the text or image. Attendance of internal examiners It is required that all internal members of the examining committee be present at the defence, unless exceptional circumstances prevent this and prior approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies has been given.
The thesis must submiission a distinct contribution to knowledge in the major field of study and the material must be of sufficient merit to be, in the judgment of the examiners, acceptable for publication. The Chair should note that all members of the examining committee have read the thesis and submitted written reports.
The approval from a U of M Research Ethics Board REB may be required prior to the student proceeding with the information gathering procedures for the thesis or practicum. Failure to provide appropriate citations constitutes plagiarism.
This situation may arise in two umanitova which are defined below and both of which are governed by the same set of regulations. The Chair also notes that the Candidate’s ability to present the thesis clearly and concisely in a 25 to 30 minute period is an essential part of the examination process.
The numbering and format must be identical to the way the material appears in the text. The material submiszion appear as soon after as it is mentioned in the text.
At the conclusion of the candidate’s presentation and before the questioning period, the Chair should allow sufficient time for submiesion members of the audience who wish to leave the session to do so. Questions submitted by the external examiner will not be forwarded to the advisor or to the candidate prior to the examination, unless this is explicitly requested by the external.
The title of the table or figure should be submkssion short as possible and indicate the major focus of the material within the table or figure.
If time permits, and after the questioning by members of the Examining Committee is completed, the Guest member if applicable and in attendance may be given an opportunity to ask questions, followed by other members of the FGS and tesis of the audience. Submit a copy of the Ethics Approval Letter received from the REB and any other pertinent access approval forms if applicable.
This is done by the Chair in discussion with the committee.
